Our Furniture: The Wood We Use

The beauty of wood, sustainably harvested

The natural and distinctive beauty of real wood dramatically enhances your home. Quagga uses hardwoods harvested sustainably in North America under strict forest management guidelines designed to protect this important resource for generations to come.

Types of wood used in quaggA furniture

cherryAmerican Cherry is a reddish wood with a beautiful luster that will deepen to a rich reddish brown with age. It has a straight grain and fine texture with beautiful markingsĀ  (gum streaks and sometimes pin knots). It is highly suitable for fine furniture.

American Black Walnut has beenused in manufacturing furniturefor walnut100s of years and is a highly valued wood.It is used in carpentry and to create musical instruments.
The heartwood is a very distinctive deep, rich brown, while the sapwood is a light greyish-white. It has a straight, open grain and fine texture with very visible growth rings.

We are now offering select furniture pieces in "Dark Chocolate" stain on Birchwood, like our NEW "Moselle" Collection, or a white-wash stain on Birch for our "qd-boxes". Please watch our qd box video or view the slide show for more information.

Solid engineered panels

blockboardWe manufacture our furniture with 5-ply blockboard. The core of the blockboard is softwood strips up to 25 mm wide. The strips are placed edge to edge and sandwiched between veneers of hardwood. This is then glued under high pressure.

This method causes the panel to become very strong and virtually all warping and twisting is eliminated.

Comparison with particleboard: Blockboard has the same properties as solid wood and is much stronger and more stable than the particleboard used by manufacturers of cheaper furniture, which is weaker and prone to moisture problems and mould and generally not built to last.
